Debate Reflection

Debate Reflection

My debate assignment was to refute the statement, "I do not agree with all the second guessing to end WWII. Japan began the war with a brutal attack on Pearl Harbor and Harry Truman chose to end the war as quickly as possible. While the deaths of Japanese civilians were unfortunate, Truman had a moral obligation to save American lives first." The dropping of the atomic bomb should not have happened. I was assigned to support the Japanese's side. My group's main points were that the Japanese would have surrendered soon without the U.S. subjecting to such drastic, unnecessary methods. This war was going to end in about 6 months but instead the U.S dropped the bomb which kept on killing people for over 2 years. What would you have done ended the war in a split second, that kept killing people over 2 years, or end the madness in 6 months.
I contributed to prepare for the debate by researching on the specific facts of topics and how it affected people later on. I contributed to the debate by giving ideas to people because I am not that strong talking in front of people. When they were puzzled on a question the other team asked i would help them on what the other team meant. Our debate started off not the strongest. We didn't look over our opening statement enough and the other team had a really strong opening statement. Over the time in the debate we started to talk more of what we though and said true facts. I think our team presented our topic very strong.
In this project i learned that there where other ways for the war to be ended instead of the U.S bombing Japan. The U.S could not have dropped the bomb and just have waited half a year to end the war. They were even killing people 2 years after the bomb was dropped. There is still radiation floating around, going through generations of people. I improved my improve skills a lot by thinking of good facts of the top of head that are related to the topic. Also this helped me with preparation  because if you want your side to win you have to have real, good, facts. If you try to go out with nothing you are bound to lose.
